IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The maps illustrate how the road access to a city hospital changed over the years, from 2007 to 2010.

Overall, it can be seen that the roads have experienced a significant development, including the roundabouts to manage the traffic. In contrast, car parking facilities had been separated for both public and staff members.

In 2007, on eastern part of the hospital road, there was a common car parking for both staff and public. However, in 2010, this parking had been transformed into staff parking. An additional parking for the public was created on the eastern part of the city hospital in 2010. In 2007, there were bus stops on both side of the hospital road, which had been transformed into separate bus station on the western part on the hospital road.

Additionally, a roundabout was constructed on the southern part of the city hospital, connecting ring road with hospital road. Similarly, another roundabout was established on the southern part of the map, connecting hospital road with city road to manage the traffic. These two roundabouts connect the bus station with the roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the maps, including the changes to parking facilities and the addition of roundabouts. You have made relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010. However, the description of the locations is occasionally imprecise. For instance, stating that the bus station was on the 'western part on the hospital road' is slightly vague compared to the visual evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial references are crystal clear and that you consistently highlight the most significant changes rather than listing every detail. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear overview provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific changes. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Additionally' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth. To improve, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'this parking' is clear, but some transitions between sentences could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of changes (parking vs. infrastructure).

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'transformed', 'constructed', and 'established'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'separated for both public and staff members' (should be 'designated for') and 'on eastern part' (missing the article 'the'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the passive voice ('was constructed', 'had been transformed'), which is appropriate for describing processes and changes. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'on eastern part' (missing 'the') and 'on both side' (should be plural 'sides'). Additionally, the use of the past perfect ('had been transformed') is sometimes unnecessary; simple past is often sufficient for describing historical changes in a map task. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication.
