IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The two maps show how road access to a city hospital changed between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road system was significantly improved in 2010. The main changes were the construction of a roundabout, a bus station and separate parking areas. The hospital itself remained in the same general location.
In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by a ring road and was connected to City Road by Hospital Road. There were several bus stops along Hospital Road, while a car park for staff and the public was located on the eastern side of the road. City Road ran from east to west at the southern side of the hospital.
By 2010, Hospital Road was still the main access road, but a roundabout had been added where it met City Road. The former bus stops were replaced by a bus station on the western side of Hospital Road. In addition, a separate staff car park was created to the east of Hospital Road, while the public car park was moved further east and became a larger public car park. The ring road around the hospital remained largely unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have clearly identified the main features, such as the construction of the roundabout, the bus station, and the changes to the car parks. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is well-handled, and the overview provides a clear summary of the significant improvements. You have successfully selected and reported the key information without getting bogged down in irrelevant details. The response is well-structured and directly addresses the prompt, making it a strong performance for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by two body paragraphs detailing the changes. Each paragraph has a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By 2010', and 'while' are used effectively to link ideas and guide the reader through the comparison. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the report. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the two time periods is clearly established throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately. Phrases like 'remained largely unchanged', 'significantly improved', and 'separate parking areas' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language. The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic report. While the range is solid, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated synonyms or collocations to describe the spatial changes, though the current level is already quite effective and natural for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used throughout. You have successfully employed complex sentences, such as 'The former bus stops were replaced by a bus station on the western side of Hospital Road', which demonstrates good control over passive voice and prepositional phrases. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense usage (past simple for 2007 and 2010) is consistent and correct.
