IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given two maps, gives a clear picture of the development made in the construction of the road near the city hospital between the years 2007 and 2010.

Overall, there are many changes done for the hospital road between the years. Previously in the year 2007, the bus stop was near the hospital road, just beside the car park, but in the year 2010 there is separate bus station on the west, which is connected to the hospital road.

To begin with, the main changes made to the hospital road is introduction of roundabout, which connects bus station located on the west. Additionally, in the year 2007, the parking was a bit an issue, because the car park included staff as well as public parking at a same area which is located on the east, beside the bus stop. Later in the year 2010, this issue was resolved, as we have separate parking for public as well as staff, public parking is shifted to the east side of city hospital, beside the ring road, whereas the staff parking remains at the same location.

The ring road remains the same between the years. Hence, no changes are made to the ring road of the city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by summarizing information from the maps and making comparisons between the years. However, it lacks a clear overview or summary of the main features. While it identifies key changes, such as the relocation of the bus station and the reorganization of parking, it could better structure these points for clarity and cohesion. The inclusion of specific details, like which areas were affected, demonstrates an understanding of the task, but the lack of a comprehensive summary limits the impact.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The coherence and cohesion of the response are moderate. It has a logical organization, yet the transitions between points can be improved. For instance, the use of linking phrases like "to begin with" is helpful, but the overall flow suffers due to a lack of manageable paragraphing. There are several run-on sentences that could benefit from clearer sentence and paragraph breaks, making it easier for the reader to follow the developments chronologically.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The lexical resource is fairly adequate, using some appropriate vocabulary to describe changes (e.g., "introduction of roundabout" and "separate bus station"). However, the use of phrases such as "a bit an issue" is informal and doesn't suit the academic tone. There were also repetitive phrases like "beside the bus stop" that could have been replaced with varied vocabulary for better precision and interest. More technical or descriptive terms specific to urban planning or road design would enhance the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical range and accuracy are the weaker facets of the writing. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement ("the two maps, gives" should be "the two maps give"), and issues with article usage (e.g., "the parking was a bit an issue"). Complex sentences are attempted, but often they are convoluted and lead to confusion. More attention to accurate grammatical structures would improve clarity and professionalism in the response.

Overall feedback

Your response covers the main changes between the years 2007 and 2010 regarding the road access to the hospital. You've successfully highlighted key developments such as the relocation of the bus stop and the introduction of separate parking areas. To improve, consider providing a more structured overview at the beginning that explicitly outlines the main changes. Focus on using varied and precise vocabulary to elevate your academic tone. Pay attention to grammatical accuracy and ensure that sentences are clear and straightforward to enhance coherence.
