IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two blueprints provided illustrate the current road facilities of city hospital and what are the other facilities were developed between 2007 and 2010.

At first glance, it is clear that different sorts of facilities were added in 2010. Firstly, the bus stop will be replaced by a roundabout in the South-East side. Immediately, it is noticeable that a newly bus station has been constructed in the South-West area of that hospital, and it connected to the two roundabouts.

As well as, the car park was relocated to the South-East are, which is inside the hospital area, and it will be accessible for the staff only. Additionally, a roundabout facilities has been created above the hospital road, and the bus stops were demolished. Moreover, a new public car park facility was built in the West side of the hospital. Moreover, a roundabout facility was introduced in South-West side which is adjacent to the city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the relocation of the car park and the addition of roundabouts. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The description of the locations is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'above the hospital road'), and the report lacks a clear overview that synthesizes the overall transformation of the site. While the main changes are mentioned, the lack of a cohesive summary of the trends (such as the shift toward improved traffic flow) limits the score. The response addresses the task requirements but needs more precise reporting of spatial relationships to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Moreover' and 'Additionally' at the start of sentences. The progression of ideas is logical, but the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when referring to 'that hospital' or 'the hospital road' without establishing clear spatial context. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to connect the changes described in 2007 to those in 2010.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes (e.g., 'demolished', 'relocated', 'constructed'). However, there is a lack of flexibility and precision. Some phrasing is awkward, such as 'blueprints' (which is not the correct term for a map) and 'a roundabout facilities' (incorrect pluralization). The range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptive terms, and there are minor errors in word choice that slightly hinder the professional tone expected in an Academic Task 1 response. Expanding the range of synonyms for movement and development would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'a newly bus station' (adverb/adjective confusion), 'a roundabout facilities' (subject-verb agreement), and 'South-East are' (spelling/word choice). Tense usage is also inconsistent, shifting between future tense ('will be replaced') and past tense, which is inappropriate for describing a static comparison of two past years. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points of the report.
