Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 83 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you have identified some main features, such as the construction of the roundabout and the bus station, the description is significantly underdeveloped. You have omitted key details regarding the road changes, such as the addition of the public car park and the specific modifications to the hospital road access. To achieve a higher band, you must provide a more comprehensive overview and ensure that all significant changes shown on the maps are described in detail to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into a brief introduction, an overview, and a single body paragraph. While there is a basic attempt at logical progression, the lack of depth and the brevity of the text make the overall structure feel incomplete. Cohesive devices are used sparingly, such as 'To begin with' and 'whereas', but the flow is disjointed due to the limited content. To improve, you should group information more effectively and use a wider range of linking words to connect your observations about the changes between 2007 and 2010 more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is functional but limited. You rely on basic terms like 'developed', 'changes', and 'constructed'. There is little evidence of the precise, topic-specific vocabulary required for describing maps, such as 'extended', 'converted', 'relocated', or 'demolished'. The phrasing 'them the staff car park' is awkward and lacks the necessary precision for an academic report. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to urban planning and map description, and aim to use a more varied range of descriptive verbs and nouns to convey information more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures. However, there are grammatical errors that affect clarity, such as the phrase 'them the staff car park just beside the hospital road', which lacks a proper verb and logical connection. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and periods in several places. While the meaning is generally understandable, the limited range of structures and the presence of errors prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using more varied sentence structures, such as passive voice, which is highly appropriate for describing map changes.
