Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 92 words. Consequently, the response is significantly underdeveloped. While the student identifies the main features of the maps, such as the ring road and the car parks, the analysis lacks the necessary depth and comparison required for an Academic Task 1 response. The description is overly simplistic and fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the significant changes, such as the introduction of the roundabout and the relocation of the bus station. To improve, the student must provide a more detailed breakdown of the changes and ensure the response meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into very short, simple paragraphs. While there is a basic attempt at logical sequencing by comparing 2007 and 2010, the lack of cohesive devices makes the writing feel disjointed. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the sentences are repetitive in structure. The use of linking words is minimal, which hinders the flow of information. To achieve a higher band, the student should use a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'subsequently') to connect ideas and improve the overall structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'city hospital is surrounded with' and 'there is a' are used repeatedly, which limits the range of expression. There is little attempt to use precise vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'constructed', 'replaced', or 'transformed'. The student relies on simple, functional language that is just adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Expanding the vocabulary to include more descriptive terms related to urban development and spatial relationships would significantly improve the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting almost entirely of simple sentences. There are noticeable errors in article usage and preposition choice, such as 'surrounded with a ring road' (should be 'by') and 'around the hospital road there is a car park' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but the lack of complex sentence structures prevents the student from demonstrating a higher level of grammatical control. To improve, the student should practice incorporating complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions and pay closer attention to standard prepositional collocations.
