IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The maps illustrate the changes in road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the hospital's road access underwent considerable transformation over the period, with major changes to the road layout, parking facilities and public transport arrangements. The most significant changes occurred around the eastern and southern sides of the hospital and along Hospital Road, while the Ring Road and the City Road remained largely unchanged.
In 2007, the eastern side of the Hospital Road was used as a car park for staff and public. By 2010, this had been converted into a staff-only car park, while a new public car park had been constructed to the east of the hospital, connected to the ring road. Meanwhile, two roundabouts were added on either side of Hospital Road, connecting it to the Ring Road and City Road.
Further modifications included the construction of a bus station on west side of the Hospital Road, providing access to the road via the newly built roundabouts. By contrast, the city hospital remained unchanged, occupying the same position throughout the period. Overall, access to the hospital became considerably more efficient by 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the changes and successfully identified the main features, such as the conversion of car parks, the addition of roundabouts, and the new bus station. The comparisons between 2007 and 2010 are accurate and well-supported by the visual data. The information is logically selected and reported, ensuring the reader gets a comprehensive understanding of the spatial changes. There are no significant omissions, and the summary is balanced and focused on the key developments shown in the maps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'By contrast', and 'Further modifications' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the changes. The logical flow from the general overview to specific spatial changes (eastern/southern sides) demonstrates a high level of control. The referencing is clear, and the relationship between the different parts of the map is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and spatial changes. Phrases like 'underwent considerable transformation', 'converted into', and 'occupying the same position' are precise and natural. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information with flexibility. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly more than adequate for a high-scoring response. There are no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of participial phrases ('providing access to the road...') and passive voice constructions ('had been constructed'). The grammar is highly accurate, with only very occasional minor slips. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your sentences. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense usage—shifting between the past perfect for changes completed by 2010 and simple past for the state in 2007—is handled with precision.
