IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The following two maps show road access to a city hospital during the years 2007 and 2010.
The layout used in 2007 starts with a Ring road on the northern most side which wraps around the City hospital in a rectangular shape. Towards the south of this road is the Hospital road which gives access to the carpark which at the time was shared among the staff and the public alike. The hospital road also supports public bus stops. And finally, down the hospital road is a four-way intersection leading to the city road.
Now the layout used in 2010 has undergone some changes compared to the 2007 layout while retaining some of its key features. First and foremost the ring road that wrapped around the City hospital still exists with the addition of a public car park towards the east as the carparks have now been separated amongst the staff and the public. Towards the south of the Ring road is the familiar hospital road now connected through a roundabout. This hospital road is now accompanied by a Bus station to the west side compared to its prior bus stops and to its east lies the carpark which was once shared by both staff and public but now isolated for the staff's use. Finally, down the hospital road is the familiar four-way intersection leading to the city road which is now connected by roundabout.
Overall the changes made to the road layout seems pretty conventional and convenient as it allows to streamline traffic as well as providing better public transportation through the bus stations. Last but not least the separation of the car parks should accommodate the hospital's scalability.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all key features of the two maps. You have successfully identified the main changes, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the separation of car parks. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is clear and logical. However, the final paragraph includes subjective commentary ('conventional and convenient', 'accommodate the hospital's scalability') which is not required in an Academic Task 1 report. IELTS Task 1 requires an objective summary of the data provided, not an evaluation or opinion. To improve, focus strictly on reporting the visual information without adding personal interpretations or conclusions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the 2007 layout, the 2010 layout, and a summary. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First and foremost', 'Towards the south', and 'compared to its prior'. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow the changes chronologically. The flow is generally smooth, though some transitions could be more sophisticated. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the maps, using terms like 'layout', 'intersection', 'roundabout', and 'streamline'. There is some awareness of collocation, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive or informal. For instance, 'familiar four-way intersection' is a bit conversational. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language regarding spatial relationships and changes, such as 'replaced by', 'transformed into', or 'situated to the north'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the carparks have now been separated amongst the staff' (should be 'between') and 'it allows to streamline traffic' (should be 'it allows for the streamlining of traffic' or 'it streamlines traffic'). Despite these occasional errors, your control over grammar is generally good, and the meaning is always clear. The punctuation is mostly accurate, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain interest throughout the report.
