IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps illustrate the difference in the access of roads to a city hospital in 2007 and in 2010.
Overall, there was the addition of two roundabouts, one in front of the hospital and the other at the junction of the city road and the hospital road. There was also some transport infrastructure included in the modified map.
Looking first at the traffic infrastructure, there was no alteration to the city road but the addition of a roundabout at the junction of the city and hospital roads in 2010. Additionally, the staff car park remained in the same location on the eastern side of the hospital road. On the western side of the hospital road, a new bus station was constructed between the two roundabouts.
Furthermore, at the opposite end of the hospital road, a roundabout was constructed in front of the hospital. On the eastern side of the hospital, a public car park was constructed. The ring road remained unchanged. The lights on the side of the hospital road were removed in the latest map.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the addition of roundabouts, the bus station, and the new car park. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant developments. The information is logically selected and reported, providing a good comparison between 2007 and 2010. To reach a higher band, the response could benefit from more precise spatial descriptions (e.g., specifying the exact location of the new roundabout relative to the hospital entrance) and a more integrated comparison of the changes rather than listing them sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the map, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The use of referencing is generally clear, ensuring the reader can easily follow the changes described between the two time periods.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terminology such as 'transport infrastructure', 'junction', 'modified', and 'constructed' correctly. There is a good attempt to use varied language to describe the changes. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would elevate it to a higher band. However, the range is adequate for the task, and there are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, and the majority of the writing is error-free. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is varied enough to maintain interest. While there are no major errors that cause confusion, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. The writing is clear and professional, showing consistent control over basic and intermediate grammatical forms throughout the text.
