IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The two maps illustrate changes to the road system and facilities around a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the hospital remained unchanged, but the surrounding area was redeveloped. The most notable changes were the construction of a ring road, the separation of parking facilities, and the addition of a bus station and two roundabouts.
In 2007, the hospital was bordered by a city road to the south, while a car park for staff and the public was located below it. Access to the car park was provided from the city road. There was no ring road or public transport facility.
By 2010, a ring road had been built around the hospital. The car park had been divided, with a public car park situated to the east and a staff car park to the south-east. In addition, a bus station was constructed on the south-west side. Two roundabouts were added on the city road, connected by an access road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully highlighted the key changes, such as the construction of the ring road, the relocation of parking, and the addition of public transport facilities. The information is accurately selected and reported, with clear comparisons between the 2007 and 2010 maps. The structure is logical, moving from a general summary to specific details, which demonstrates a strong grasp of the task requirements. No significant information was omitted, and the response is well-focused throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is well-organized and easy to follow. Each paragraph has a clear purpose: the introduction sets the context, the second paragraph provides a concise overview, and the subsequent paragraphs detail the specific changes. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'By 2010', and 'In addition' effectively to link ideas and guide the reader through the chronological changes. The progression of information is logical, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately. Terms such as 'redeveloped', 'bordered', 'situated', and 'constructed' are used appropriately in context. The vocabulary is precise and fits the academic tone required for this task. While the range is adequate and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'added' or 'built' could elevate the response further. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is natural and fits the topic well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the passive construction 'a ring road had been built' and the participial phrase 'connected by an access road'. The grammar is accurate, and there are no significant errors that affect readability. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and list items. The control over tense usage—shifting between the past simple for 2007 and the past perfect for changes completed by 2010—is particularly strong and shows a high level of grammatical awareness.
