IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps provide information on road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
The city hospital was surrounded by ring road in both years. A new public car park area was introduced in 2010 towards the right of the hospital. The car park that was alloted for both staff and public in 2007 has been replaced by staff car park in 2010. The bus stops that were on both sides of the hospital road have been removed and a new bus station was opened.
The first map explains the layout from 2007. If you take a right from the city road, you enter the hospital road. There were bus stops on either side of the road. Towards the east of the hospital road, a car park was alloted for both staff and public. The entry to the car park is through the ring road. The ring road surrounds the city hospital.
In 2010, when one comes from the city road, they can see a new roundabout. Taking the exit to the right leads to the hospital road. The bus stops that were beside the hospital road have been removed. A new bus station has started which is to the left of the hospital road. To reach the bus station we have to take the 3rd exit, the one before the hospital road. The car park which was accesssible to both staff and public is now only accessible to staff. Another roundabout has been introduced at the ring road. The ring road still surrounds the city hospital. Towards the east, a new car park is opened which is accessible to the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, including the changes to the car parks, the removal of bus stops, and the addition of roundabouts. You provided a clear overview and compared the two years effectively. However, the structure is slightly repetitive; you describe the 2007 map in detail in the second paragraph and then describe the 2010 changes in the third, which leads to some redundancy. To improve, focus on grouping features by category (e.g., road infrastructure, parking, public transport) rather than describing the maps chronologically. This would allow for a more analytical approach that better highlights the differences between the two time periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use paragraphing to separate the introduction, the 2007 layout, and the 2010 changes. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'The first map explains' and 'In 2010, when one comes from' are functional but could be more sophisticated. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the repeated mention of the 'ring road' and 'hospital road'. Using more varied transition signals and referencing techniques would improve the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'roundabout', 'infrastructure', and 'accessible' correctly. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'alloted' (allotted) and 'accesssible' (accessible). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repeating the same nouns and verbs. For example, instead of saying 'a new bus station was opened', you could use 'a new bus station was established' or 'a new bus station was constructed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'The car park that was alloted... has been replaced by staff car park' (should be 'a staff car park') and 'A new bus station has started' (should be 'A new bus station was opened'). Despite these occasional errors, your grammar does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of your complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent use of articles.
