IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps show how road access to a city hospital changed over the years from 2007 to 2010.

Over the years, there were significant changes in the facilities and arrangements made. In 2010, roundabouts were introduced in the city, which were absent in 2007. A bus station was also constructed replacing the old bus stops, thus improving connectivity. Also the public and staff car parking was separated later on.

In 2007, there was a city road, which connected to a hospital road which in turn connected to a ring road surrounding a city hospital. The area to the right of the hospital road was reserved for both staff and public parking. Also there were bus stops on both sides of the road.

In 2010 roundabouts were introduced, one in the junction between the city road and hospital road and another in the junction between ring road and hospital road. Further, a bus station was built to the left of hospital road, thus replacing the bus stops on either side of the road. Also the area earlier reserved for both public and staff parking, was then converted to a staff car parking zone and the public car parking area was moved to an area on the right of city hospital connected by ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, including the introduction of roundabouts, the construction of a new bus station, and the reorganization of parking facilities. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is clear and accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide a more comprehensive overview in the introduction. While you mention 'significant changes', summarizing the specific nature of these changes (e.g., the shift from simple road access to a more structured system with roundabouts and dedicated parking) would provide a stronger summary. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from a general overview to specific details of the 2007 and 2010 maps. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the time periods. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'in turn', 'further', and 'thus', which help the reader follow the narrative. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you link sentences to create a more natural flow, ensuring that the relationship between the changes in infrastructure and their impact on the hospital access is more tightly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'connectivity', 'junction', and 'reserved'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for describing maps. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'road' and 'parking'. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more varied synonyms or descriptive phrases to characterize the changes, such as 'infrastructure development', 'reconfiguration', or 'designated zones'. While the current vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the sophistication required for the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the unnecessary comma in 'Also the area earlier reserved for both public and staff parking, was then converted...' and the slightly awkward phrasing in 'one in the junction between the city road and hospital road'. Despite these, your control over grammar and punctuation is generally good, and errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining your use of articles and prepositional phrases to ensure greater accuracy.
