IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps shows changing road infra-sturcture being developed in respective years 2007 and 2010.

During the year 2007, around the hospital Ring Road was built. On the South side straight Hospital road is present which leads to City Road from Hospital side. On the East side there is a car parking for the staff serving in the hospital and public.

During the year 2010, two roundabouts where built to ease the flow of traffic congestion to easily manage the increased flow of visitors to the hospital. First roundabout was built where the Hospital Road meets the City Road and second Roundabout was built where Hospital Road meets the Ring Road leading to hospital. On the West side of Hospital Road a Bus Station was developed for the public facilitation. Public car parking space was shifted to East side of Hospital on the Ring Road while staff car parking space is same. Both given access to hospital on Ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the addition of roundabouts, the bus station, and the relocation of parking. However, the overview is missing. A successful Task 1 response must include a clear summary of the overall trends or significant changes observed between the two years. While the details are generally accurate, the description of the parking relocation is slightly confusing, and the response lacks a cohesive overview paragraph to synthesize the information. To improve, ensure you explicitly state the most significant changes in an introductory or concluding summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into two paragraphs, which is a logical approach for comparing two time periods. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., starting sentences with 'During the year...'). The progression of information within the second paragraph is a bit cluttered, particularly when describing the relocation of parking spaces. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to show contrast or addition more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for the description of infrastructure changes. There are some spelling errors, such as 'infra-sturcture' and 'where built' (instead of 'were built'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to urban planning, such as 'constructed,' 'relocated,' 'facilitated,' or 'integrated,' and ensure that common words are spelled correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The two maps shows' (subject-verb agreement) and 'two roundabouts where built' (incorrect word choice). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing map changes.
