IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital changed between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the hospital itself remained largely unchanged, but the surrounding transport system was significantly developed. The main changes included the construction of two roundabouts, a new bus station and separate car parks for staff and the public.

In 2007, the city hospital was surrounded by Ring Road, while Hospital Road ran southwards from the hospital to City Road. There were three bus stops on each side of Hospital Road. A single car park for both staff and the public was situated to the east of Hospital Road, between the hospital and City Road.

By 2010, Hospital Road had been connected to two roundabouts, one on City Road and another near the hospital entrance. The former bus stops were replaced by a bus station on the western side of Hospital Road. In addition, the original car park was replaced by two separate areas. A staff car park was located near the lower roundabout, while a public car park was built to the east of the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully identified the key changes between 2007 and 2010, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the bus station, and the reorganization of car parks. The information is accurately reported, and the comparisons between the two time periods are logical and easy to follow. You have successfully highlighted the most significant features without getting bogged down in irrelevant detail, which is exactly what is required for an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-organized and follows a logical progression. The introduction clearly states the purpose of the report, and the overview paragraph provides a concise summary of the main developments. Each body paragraph is focused on a specific time period or set of features, which helps the reader navigate the information easily. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By 2010', and 'The former' are used effectively to link ideas and sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately. Terms such as 'significantly developed', 'construction', 'replaced', and 'situated' are used appropriately in context. The language is precise and natural, allowing for a clear description of the spatial changes on the map. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or descriptive adjectives could elevate the response further, but the current range is more than adequate for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including passive voice constructions (e.g., 'was replaced by', 'was built to'), which are highly appropriate for describing processes and changes in maps. The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The flow of the text is smooth, and there are no grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over complex structures is consistent and accurate.
