Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given map demonstrates the transformation of road access to city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, a significant development can be observed in the gap of three years. Major development includes the distinguish parking facilities for staff and public, and a separate bus station has been developed replacing old bus stops.

Healthy amount of changes can be seen in the given three year period. Parking facilities which were combined for both hospital staff and public has been separated, public parking shifted to the east side of the hospital leaving old combined parking space for staff only. On the side of the staff parking a bigger bus station has been constructed replacing old small, individual bus stops.

The map also shows development of roundabouts on the hospital roads. One near the hospital and one at the entrance from the city road which helps in better management of traffic around hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the separation of parking facilities, the new bus station, and the addition of roundabouts. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise comparisons. For instance, you mention the 'east side' for public parking, but you could have been more specific about the location of the roundabouts relative to the hospital roads. While all key changes are covered, the analysis is somewhat brief, and adding a bit more detail regarding the layout would have strengthened the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group related information. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall' and 'The map also shows', to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The phrase 'Healthy amount of changes' is an informal way to start a paragraph. Using more varied linking words or phrases to connect the development of the parking facilities to the construction of the bus station would improve the flow and cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformation', 'significant development', and 'management of traffic'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'distinguish parking facilities' should be 'distinct' or 'separate', and 'Healthy amount of changes' is not appropriate for an academic report; 'A significant number of changes' or 'Substantial modifications' would be better. Additionally, 'On the side of the staff parking' is slightly awkward phrasing. Expanding your range of academic collocations will help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Parking facilities which were combined... has been separated' (subject-verb agreement error: 'facilities' is plural, so it should be 'have been separated'). Another error is 'One near the hospital and one at the entrance... which helps in better management', where the sentence fragment lacks a main verb. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will improve your accuracy.
