Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the changes to the bus stops, car parks, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the prompt asks to summarize information, the student focuses on listing changes directionally rather than synthesizing the overall transformation of the hospital's infrastructure. Some descriptions, such as the 'eastern direction of city hospital car park', are slightly inaccurate regarding the layout shown in the maps. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on grouping information more logically and providing a more cohesive summary of the trends observed between 2007 and 2010.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'direction of' and 'remain same'. The overview provided in the second paragraph is vague and does not effectively summarize the key changes. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the car park split. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There is a heavy reliance on basic directional language ('northern direction', 'north east side', 'south west direction'). Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'city road hospital road' and 'two roundabout shaped was situated'. The student attempts to describe the changes, but the word choice is often imprecise, which limits the ability to convey the information clearly. To improve, the student should focus on using more specific terminology related to urban planning and infrastructure, such as 'junctions', 'access points', or 'reconfigured'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('two roundabout shaped was situated') and awkward sentence construction ('the eastern direction of city hospital car park: staff and public was divide in to two park'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence structure prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would be beneficial.
