Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts, the changes to car parking, and the bus station relocation. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview of the most significant changes. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is present but could be more analytical. For instance, the description of the car parks is confusing and repetitive, failing to clearly contrast the single shared facility with the new separate ones. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in describing the spatial changes limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for a Task 1 response. There is a basic attempt at logical progression, moving from the 2007 map to the 2010 map and concluding with an overview. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'the other' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel mechanical rather than natural. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between ideas within the second paragraph is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the specific changes to the road layout clearly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'around about' instead of 'roundabouts', 'easrern' for 'eastern', and 'convient' for 'convenient'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequent spelling errors and the lack of sophisticated terminology to describe geographical changes (e.g., 'replaced', 'relocated', 'constructed') prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'There was several bus stop' (subject-verb agreement error), 'the old share car park were replace' (tense and passive voice errors), and 'the changes made to access hospital easier' (missing preposition/article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization or ending punctuation. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures.
