IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps below compare the road access to a city hospital in the years 2007 and 2010.

Overall, there are many changes made in the 2010 map compared to the 2007 version, with additional infrastructure.

Previously, the bus station was constructed on the far east of the city hospital. However, in order to improve the services, the bus station was constructed near the city hospital. Regarding the parking, it was segregated between staff and the public in 2010, where staff parking was kept in the same spot, and the public parking was shifted to the northern direction, which was used in one spot previously in 2007. Furthermore, there was construction of a roundabout in multiple spots in 2010, which was not constructed in 2007.

In conclusion, the blueprint of 2010 access to the city hospital was well equipped with various infrastructure, which was not introduced in early 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the bus station relocation, parking changes, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the main trends are identified, the description of the parking changes is somewhat confusingly phrased, specifically the mention of 'one spot previously in 2007'. The overview is present but could be more detailed regarding the overall layout changes. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and provide a more precise comparison of the spatial changes between the two years.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Previously', 'However', 'Regarding', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, the flow within the body paragraph is slightly mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression could be smoother. The structure is adequate for the task, but more sophisticated linking words would help elevate the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'infrastructure', 'segregated', and 'roundabout'. However, there is some repetition and a lack of variety in descriptive language. Phrases like 'constructed on the far east' and 'shifted to the northern direction' are functional but basic. There are no significant spelling errors, but the range of vocabulary is limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and varied synonyms to describe spatial changes and infrastructure development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'there are many changes made in the 2010 map' (which should be 'were made') and 'the blueprint of 2010 access... was well equipped'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a lack of full control over complex structures. The punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is limited. Increasing the use of varied subordinate clauses would improve the grammatical range.
