IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided maps compare the layout of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and how it looks in 2010 after reconstruction.

Overall, the road access to the hospital has undergone significant changes over time with better facilities. the major changes include development of roundabouts connecting a bus station near the hospital road, removal of bus stops and separation of staff and public car park, whereas the city hospital and ring road remain the same.

In 2007, six bus stops were distributed equally in the both sides the hospital road. To the east of the road, car park for both staff and public was located. the hospital road was connected to the city road at the southern part of the map, whereas the actual hospital was surrounded by a road called ring road at the northern part, which was not changed in 2010.

However, in 2010, multiple changes have been made. At the eastern part of the city hospital, a new public car park has been constructed connected to the main ring road. Moreover, the former bus stops have been replaced by two roundabouts that connect a new bus station at the south-west part of the hospital road, whereas the car park at the south-east in now used by staff only. Otherwise, the city road still remains at the same spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and comparing the two maps. You have successfully highlighted the key changes, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the reconfiguration of the car parks. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, the location of the new public car park is described as 'eastern part of the city hospital', which is accurate, but more specific references to the road names or relative positions could enhance the clarity of the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological and thematic progression. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'moreover' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the 2007 layout from the 2010 changes. One minor area for improvement is the referencing; for example, 'the city road still remains at the same spot' could be more smoothly integrated into the preceding sentence to improve the flow of the final paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'reconstruction', 'distributed', and 'reconfigured' (implied). The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'the city hospital and ring road remain the same' where 'remained' would be more consistent with the past tense used for the 2007 description. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the information clearly without any significant strain on the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'the major changes include development of roundabouts connecting a bus station...'. While the grammar is generally accurate, there are some minor errors, such as missing articles ('car park for both staff and public') and inconsistent capitalization at the start of sentences ('the major changes', 'the hospital road'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, but consistent attention to punctuation and article usage would elevate the accuracy of your writing.
