IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided maps compare the layout of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and how it looks in 2010 after reconstruction.

Overall, the road access to the hospital has undergone significant changes over time with better facilities. the major changes include development of roundabouts connecting a bus station near the hospital road, removal of bus stops and separation of staff and public car park, whereas the city hospital and ring road remain the same.

In 2007, six bus stops were distributed equally in the both sides the hospital road. To the east of the road, car park for both staff and public was located. the hospital road was connected to the city road at the southern part of the map, whereas the actual hospital was surrounded by a road called ring road at the northern part, which was not changed in 2010.

However, in 2010, multiple changes have been made. At the eastern part of the city hospital, a new public car park has been constructed connected to the main ring road. Moreover, the former bus stops have been replaced by two roundabouts that connect a new bus station at the south-west part of the hospital road, whereas the car park at the south-east in now used by staff only. Otherwise, the city road still remains at the same spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps and provided a clear overview of the changes. You covered the key developments, such as the roundabouts, the new bus station, and the reconfiguration of the car parks. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is logical and well-supported by the visual data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, describing the location of the new public car park as 'eastern part' is accurate, but you could further enhance the response by explicitly contrasting the total capacity or layout changes more analytically. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression from the introduction to the overview and then to the body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'moreover' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the 2007 description from the 2010 changes. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is clear, and the reader can easily follow the comparison between the two time periods. The structure supports the information well, making the report easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstruction', 'distributed', and 'reconfigured' (implied). There is a good attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to urban planning. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'distributed equally in the both sides the hospital road' (should be 'on both sides of'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'change' or 'location' to show greater flexibility. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but a wider variety of precise, academic collocations would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' clauses to contrast information. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the city hospital', 'the southern part') and prepositions ('in the both sides'). Some sentences lack proper capitalization at the beginning. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy. You have a good foundation, but more attention to detail in sentence construction is needed for a higher band.
