IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The provided maps compare the layout of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and how it looked in 2010 after reconstruction.
Overall, the road access to the hospital underwent significant changes over time. The major changes included the development of two roundabouts, the construction of a bus station, the removal of the bus stops, and the separation of the staff and public car parks, whereas the city hospital and ring road remained largely unchanged.
In 2007, six bus stops were evenly distributed on both sides of the hospital road. To the east of the road, there was a car park for both staff and the public. The hospital road was connected to the city road at the southern part of the map, whereas the hospital itself was surrounded by a road called the ring road at the northern part, which remained unchanged in 2010.
However, in 2010, multiple changes had been made. On the eastern side of the city hospital, a new public car park had been constructed and connected to the main ring road. Moreover, the former bus stops had been replaced by two roundabouts, which connected to a new bus station at the south-western part of the hospital road, while the car park in the south-east was now used by staff only. Otherwise, the city road remained in the same location.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the changes to car parking arrangements. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the significant transformations between 2007 and 2010. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that the hospital and ring road remained unchanged while other areas were modified. The information is accurate and well-selected, ensuring the reader gets a comprehensive picture of the changes without unnecessary detail. This meets the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed descriptions of the two time periods. Cohesive devices, such as 'whereas', 'however', 'moreover', and 'while', are used appropriately to link sentences and clauses, creating a smooth flow of information. The referencing is clear, and the transition between the 2007 and 2010 descriptions is handled well. The structure is coherent throughout, making the report easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes accurately. Terms such as 'reconstruction', 'distributed', 'constructed', and 'modified' are used correctly in context. The vocabulary is precise enough to convey the specific changes in the map layout. While the range is adequate and functional, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the spatial changes, which would elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the lexical control is good and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of subordinate clauses with 'whereas' and 'while'. The control over tense usage is accurate, correctly shifting between the past simple for 2007 and the past perfect for the changes leading up to 2010. Punctuation is generally accurate, and there are very few errors. The majority of sentences are error-free, reflecting a high level of grammatical control.
