IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided schematic diagrams represent the evolution of road connectivity to the city hospital over the period from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, the area around the city hospital has been revamped over the time, making patients easier to travel. While significant changes were observed around the city hospital; relocating some public service facilities from here to there, the demography of the roads has remained same.
In the south-west corner of the hospital, general car park facility was replaced with bus station and two roundabouts introduced to it, one linking to the city road and second one approaching to the ring road. Besides, the car park for public and staff was converted into only staff car park.
Additionally, the public car park facility was placed on the eastern side of the city hospital and entry gate was provided from the ring road. One roundabout added to the south-east corner as well. Although, the construction of the city road, hospital road, and ring road was changed slightly by placing roundabouts, placement of the city hospital and the roads were remained as it was.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the maps, such as the introduction of roundabouts and the relocation of car parks. You have provided a clear overview and supported it with specific details from the diagrams. However, the description of the changes is slightly imprecise in places, such as the phrase 'relocating some public service facilities from here to there', which is vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise and avoid informal phrasing. You have covered all parts of the task well, providing a logical comparison between the 2007 and 2010 layouts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location. Cohesive devices such as 'In the south-west corner', 'Besides', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'schematic diagrams', 'revamped', and 'demography' (though 'layout' or 'configuration' would be more accurate than 'demography' here). There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'making patients easier to travel' (which should be 'making it easier for patients to travel') and 'demography of the roads'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the roads were remained as it was' (passive voice error) and 'one linking to the city road and second one approaching to the ring road' (missing articles). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the information. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
