IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps beneath illustrates the accession of road to a city hospital in two different years 2007 and 2010. At a first glance it can be seen that map of later period has much more than from the previous map as there is an addition of bus station and separate parking spaces for public and staff. Additionally, there are two roundabouts on the road which were earlier not there.

From the given information we can see that in the map of 2007 there were no bus station but six bus stops opposite to each other on left and right side of hospital road. There is parking place which is designated for both public and staff of the hospital on the eastern side

The second map displays an addition of parking space for public in the east. Moreover, it also has a bus station rather than bus stops and two roundabouts are also added one on the city road and other on hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of the bus station, roundabouts, and the changes to parking. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the additions, it lacks a clear summary of the overall transformation of the hospital's accessibility. The description of the 2007 map is somewhat repetitive, and the comparison between the two years could be more precise. For instance, describing the bus stops as 'opposite to each other' is helpful, but the spatial relationship of the new roundabouts could be described with more clarity to ensure the reader fully understands the layout changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, a description of the first map, and a description of the second map. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'From the given information', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the two paragraphs could be smoother to better highlight the comparative nature of the task. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial state from the subsequent developments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for the description of the maps. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'accession of road' (should be 'road access') and 'map of later period' (should be 'the later map'). The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise geographical and descriptive terminology, such as 'situated', 'replaced by', 'constructed', or 'facilitating access'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'The two maps beneath illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error: should be 'illustrate') and 'there were no bus station' (should be 'there were no bus stations'). The sentence structures are relatively simple, and while there is an attempt at complex sentences, they often contain minor errors. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
