IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

As the city hospital is developed over the 3 years, many things in its sorroudings has been changed. The hospital has a ing road around it and on the front side the hospital road is connected to the city road. As it is shown in the picture the map of this area was vey basic .

By time things are putted accordingly such as separation of staff and public parking and the shifting of the bus stop and also the appearance of roundabouts for better traffic descipline. In 2007 the road access to the hospital was quite different as compared to the road access in 2010.

Cars coming from ring road have better access to the public car parking and then if anyone wants to go to the city road it can take the road access of the hospital . That way the in and out from hospital is very easy and accessible with no extra traffic.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the changes between the two maps, but it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the most significant features. While it mentions the parking and roundabouts, the description is vague and lacks precise detail regarding the layout changes. The response does not adequately compare the 2007 and 2010 maps, instead offering a somewhat disjointed narrative. To improve, you should provide a clear summary of the main trends and use specific data from the maps, such as the addition of the bus station or the specific road modifications, to support your points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For instance, phrases like 'By time' are used incorrectly, which disrupts the flow of information. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme and use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to connect your sentences and ideas more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, with several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'sorroudings' instead of 'surroundings' and 'putted' instead of 'placed'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on simple descriptors like 'very basic' or 'quite different'. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'infrastructure', 'redesigned', 'facilitate', or 'access points', and ensure you check your spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('many things... has been changed') and awkward sentence structures ('it can take the road access of the hospital'). The range of sentence structures is limited, and the errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to follow. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage. Practice writing complex sentences using relative clauses or passive voice to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
