IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The maps illustrate the transformation in several details of the city hospital over two distinct milestones, 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the hospital has changed significantly over 3 years, with more additions constructed around the main area.

Previously, in 2007, the car park served both staff and clients coming to the hospital. After 3 years, the purpose of that area was changed to a staff-only car park, while an additional one for customers was constructed on the east side of the main hall with an entry from the Ring Rd.

Moreover, instead of keeping all bus stops placed along both sides of Hospital Rd, the site was then removed, turning into a bus station, which was located on the west side of the road. To connect three roads leading to the hospital, two roundabouts were built, with one standing between City Rd and Hospital Rd, whilst the other linked Hospital Rd and Ring Rd together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, including the changes to the car parks, the bus station, and the addition of roundabouts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010. The information is accurate and covers all key developments shown in the diagrams. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly mention the location of the new car park relative to the hospital building more precisely, and perhaps elaborate slightly more on the overall layout changes to ensure a fully comprehensive summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. You use cohesive devices such as 'Previously', 'After 3 years', 'Moreover', and 'instead of' effectively to guide the reader through the changes. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a short report. The use of referencing is clear, and the relationship between the different parts of the hospital is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'transformation', 'distinct milestones', 'constructed', and 'linked'. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific vocabulary related to urban planning or infrastructure, such as 'reconfigured', 'integrated', or 'facilitated access'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whilst' and 'instead of' clauses, which shows good control. The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor issues. For instance, 'the site was then removed' is slightly awkward; 'the bus stops were removed' would be more natural. Punctuation is used correctly, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over complex structures is consistent, which supports clear communication of the spatial changes described in the task.
