IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrates about a roadway which connects to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

To begin with, In 2007 the city hospital is surrounded by ring road, where the City Road connects with Hospital Road in order to access the main entrance of hospital. The car parking area is allotted on the right side of the hospital. Additionally there is a bus stop facilities on the East side of the map.

Moreover, In 2010 there was a major change on the map of city hospital. Now, there are two roundabout which will help to reduce the traffic and it will not be as difficult as it was in 2007. This can now connect the Bus station which is near to the hospital compared to past. Other changes are regarding parking, they divided in two areas where public and staff parking are separated.

In conclusion, The city hospital gets changed and updated compared to previous year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the changes to parking and bus access. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the road layout in 2007 is slightly inaccurate regarding the 'ring road' description, and the commentary on traffic reduction is speculative rather than descriptive, which is not appropriate for a data-reporting task. To reach a higher band, you should focus strictly on describing the visual changes (e.g., the relocation of the bus station and the conversion of the road junction into roundabouts) without adding personal opinions about traffic flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from 2007 to 2010. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to structure the response. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally mechanical. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'This can now connect the Bus station', where the antecedent of 'This' is ambiguous. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly connects to the previous one would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. You use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'on the map of city hospital' and 'the city hospital gets changed'. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'bus stop facilities' (the map shows a bus station) and 'allotted on the right side'. To improve, try to use more specific terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'situated', 'located', 'transformed', or 'replaced'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'The two maps illustrates' (should be 'illustrate') and 'there are two roundabout' (should be 'roundabouts'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and tense consistency, such as 'the city hospital is surrounded' when describing a past state (2007). While you attempt some complex structures, they are often marred by these errors. Focusing on basic accuracy, particularly pluralization and verb tenses, will significantly improve your score.
