Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrates about a roadway which connects to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

To begin with, In 2007 the city hospital is surrounded by ring road, where the City Road connects with Hospital Road in order to access the main entrance of hospital. The car parking area is allotted on the right side of the hospital. Additionally there is a bus stop facilities on the East side of the map.

Moreover, In 2010 there was a major change on the map of city hospital. Now, there are two roundabout which will help to reduce the traffic and it will not be as difficult as it was in 2007. This can now connect the Bus station which is near to the hospital compared to past. Other changes are regarding parking, they divided in two areas where public and staff parking are separated.

In conclusion, The city hospital gets changed and updated compared to previous year

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the changes to parking and bus access. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the road layout in 2007 is slightly confusing, and the comparison between the two years lacks precision regarding the specific locations of the new features. The conclusion is overly brief and does not effectively summarize the key trends. To improve, ensure that all major changes are clearly identified and described with specific reference to their positions on the map, rather than making general statements about traffic or difficulty.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from 2007 to 2010. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive, such as the reliance on 'To begin with' and 'Moreover'. Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the road changes. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'bus stop facilities' and 'the city hospital gets changed'. The student relies on basic descriptive language rather than using more sophisticated terms related to urban planning or map description. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on using more precise vocabulary to describe spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', 'constructed', or 'transformed', rather than relying on generic verbs like 'changed' or 'updated'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates', 'there are two roundabout') and incorrect article usage ('the main entrance of hospital'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly pluralization and subject-verb agreement, and attempt to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater precision.
