Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the roundabouts, the bus station, and the parking changes. However, the description is incomplete. It fails to mention the new public and staff car parks that replaced the original single car park, and it omits the road access changes for the public car park. While the overview is present, the lack of detail regarding these significant changes means the response does not fully address all parts of the task. The information provided is accurate, but the selection of features is not comprehensive enough for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from 2007 to 2010. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is somewhat disjointed due to the limited range of cohesive tools employed.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'signifyingly' instead of 'significantly', 'ro' instead of 'to', and 'ease' instead of 'east'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited control over lexical items. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to describe the maps, but it does not show the flexibility or precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the main changes construction'), incorrect verb forms ('the two map illustrate'), and punctuation issues (run-on sentences and missing commas). While the meaning remains clear, these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of articles, and ensuring that sentences are properly punctuated.
