Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps compare road accessibility to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, road access to the city hospital was redeveloped, and introduced several facilities, such as for both staff and public, each allocated their own parking space, a new bus station, and two roundabouts on the city road. On the east of the hospital, new gate was introduced for a public car park. The area of hospital was remained on the same positions.

The hospital was remained on the same positions as in the past. On the hospital road, two roundabouts were constructed. The car park who was accessible by both staff and public in 2007, was restricted for only staff use in 2010, whereas for public use, it was relocated to the east side of the city hospital, where a new public car park was constructed.

All the six bus stop on the hospital road was removed, and built a new bus station, which was accessible from both roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the changes to the car parks, the introduction of roundabouts, and the bus station. However, the overview is slightly repetitive, and some details are under-developed. For instance, the description of the hospital's location is redundant, appearing in both the overview and the body paragraphs. While the key changes are identified, the comparison between 2007 and 2010 could be more precise in terms of spatial relationships. Overall, the response provides a clear summary of the main trends and changes, meeting the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'whereas' and 'on the east of', which help guide the reader. However, there is some repetition in the phrasing, particularly regarding the hospital's position, which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the development. While the progression is generally clear, the connection between sentences could be improved to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a clear description of the changes. Terms like 'redeveloped', 'allocated', 'restricted', and 'relocated' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'The area of hospital was remained on the same positions', which is awkward. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the necessary information, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'The hospital was remained' (incorrect passive voice), 'The car park who was accessible' (incorrect relative pronoun), and 'All the six bus stop... was removed' (subject-verb agreement errors). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A more careful proofreading of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy.
