IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given maps illustrates road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the diagram compares two maps. While the map of 2010 has seen the major developments like roundabout, public car park and even bus station.

Obviously, in 2007 city hospital was surrounded by the ring road and it contained the junction which leads to car park staff and public. Surely, on the right hand there was a bus stop. Clearly, the map of 2007 indicated the city road and on the right of city road it sustained the hospital road which leads to city hospital.

It's crystal clear that in the map of 2010 the city hospital kept a public car park on the right side of city hospital it also contained a junction in ring road. No doubt, below the hospital it was a roundabout on the left side of roundabout it kept a bus station and the right side of corner of bus station it sustained another roundabout which leads to city road on the right hand. Surely, on the right hand of first roundabout it indicated a staff car park and between the staff car park and bus station it illustrated a road that leads to first roundabout.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response identifies the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the bus station. However, the description is often confusing and lacks precision. For example, phrases like 'below the hospital it was a roundabout' are vague and do not accurately convey the spatial relationships shown in the diagrams. While the key changes are mentioned, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview that synthesizes the information effectively. The response would benefit from more precise directional language and a clearer comparison between the two years to better highlight the transformation of the hospital's road access.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of information is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inappropriate, such as the repetitive use of 'Surely' and 'Clearly' at the start of sentences, which does not contribute to logical progression. Referencing is also problematic; for instance, 'it sustained another roundabout' is unclear in its reference. The overall structure lacks a smooth transition between the 2007 and 2010 descriptions, making it difficult for the reader to follow the development of the road network over time.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There is a reliance on basic verbs like 'contained', 'kept', and 'sustained', which are used incorrectly in this context (e.g., 'it sustained the hospital road'). The student struggles to use precise terminology for map descriptions, such as 'junctions', 'intersections', or 'access points'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of variety and the frequent misuse of words prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More specific vocabulary related to urban planning and map features is required.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The given maps illustrates') and awkward sentence structures (e.g., 'the map of 2010 has seen the major developments like roundabout'). The use of articles is inconsistent, and many sentences are poorly constructed, leading to a lack of fluency. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they are often faulty. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and accurate verb usage is necessary to improve the grammatical quality of the writing.
