IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two layouts illustrate the establishment of new facilities and development of infrastructure of the city hospital between the years 2007 and 2010.

Overall, there are no major changes in the layout of the city hospital. The most noticeable change that was carried out in the year 2010 is the separation of the public and staff parking areas and the replacement of the bus stop with the construction of a roundabout.

In the year 2007, the city hospital with a ring road surrounding it has only one entrance road, which could be accessed from the right side of the city road. There is a car parking for the community and workers, combined with the bus stop on Hospital Road.

In the year 2010, the position of the city hospital and ring road remained the same; only minor infrastructure development occurred, including the introduction of roundabouts at the two junctions of the hospital road. The car parking is split into public parking relocating to the east side of the hospital and staff parking that remains in its original position. The bus station is constructed at the west side of the staff car parking area, which can be accessed by both roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps and provided a clear comparison between 2007 and 2010. You highlighted the key changes, such as the separation of parking areas and the introduction of roundabouts, which demonstrates a good grasp of the task requirements. The overview is concise and effectively summarizes the trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, you mentioned the bus station is on the west side of the staff parking, but the map shows it is located on the hospital site itself. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all necessary aspects of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the two time periods effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'In the year 2007' and 'In the year 2010' to guide the reader through the chronological changes. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a task of this length. To improve further, you could use a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect sentences within paragraphs, rather than relying primarily on time-based transitions, which would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'infrastructure development', 'relocating', and 'junctions' accurately. Your word choice is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to urban planning, such as 'accessibility', 'redesign', or 'configuration', to show greater flexibility and precision in your descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense usage—switching between the past and present to describe the maps—is consistent. There are a few minor issues, such as 'There is a car parking', which should be 'There was a car park' or 'car parking area'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion. Continuing to practice complex sentence structures will help you maintain this level of accuracy while increasing the variety of your grammatical range.
