IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps compare and give information about the changes around the area of city hospital in the year 2007 and 2010.

At a glance both maps show clear differences. In the year 2007 there are bus stops around hospital road while in the year 2010 there are two roundabouts instead.

To begin with 2007, city hospital is in the middle of ring road. Staff and public parking area is in the southeast side of city hospital whereas bus stops are on both (southwest and southeast) sides of hospital road which is connected with city road.

Moving on to 2010, ring road still surrounds city hospital although public car park is moved on the east of city hospital. Bus station is constructed on the west side of city hospital connecting with two roundabouts. These roundabouts are one of the prominent differences between two maps. Staff parking area stays the same in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the addition of roundabouts, the relocation of the public car park, and the construction of a bus station. However, the overview is somewhat limited. While you mention 'clear differences,' a more effective overview would explicitly highlight the transition from a simpler road layout to a more complex one with dedicated transport facilities. The description of the locations is generally accurate, but some details, such as the specific road names, could be integrated more fluidly to improve the clarity of the spatial comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction to a description of the 2007 layout, and finally the 2010 changes. The use of cohesive devices like 'To begin with,' 'Moving on to,' and 'whereas' helps guide the reader through the comparison. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the description of the 2007 parking and the bus stops could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of information is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prominent differences,' 'constructed,' and 'relocated' (implied by 'moved'). There is some repetition of basic structures and vocabulary, such as 'city hospital' and 'area.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for spatial descriptions and infrastructure, such as 'thoroughfare,' 'junction,' or 'facility.' The word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication, though it lacks the sophistication required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally clear, there are minor errors, such as missing articles ('in the southeast side' should be 'in the southeastern part') and some awkward phrasing ('public car park is moved on the east'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, but the lack of more complex, error-free structures keeps the score in the mid-range.
