IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given illustrations show the changes of roads that provide access to the city hospital in 2007 and in 2010.
Overall, ring road surrounds hospital in both plans, the map of hospital in 2007 has only one parking for both staff and public, while in 2010 the hospital has 2 parking available. Moreover, it can be seen that, there are no roundabouts in 2007 map and bus stop is located in east side of the map. While all of these placements change in 2010.
The earliest map of hospital has ring road surrounding the building, and right in the middle, front hospital road gives access to the outside of the facility, which connects with city road directly. Between city road and ring road, there is one parking area for staff and public. Finally, bus stop can be seen on the northern east side of the map.
While, in 2010 the placement of ring road around hospital building stays the same, there is addition of 2 roundabouts connecting hospital road and city road with bus station, that has been moved from north east side of the map to southern west of it. Instead of just one parking, now there are two separate parking for public and staff. Moreover, one more roundabout can be located on the southern east side of building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the maps, including the ring road, parking facilities, roundabouts, and the relocation of the bus stop. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the two years. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes, such as the expansion of parking and the addition of roundabouts. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for instance, describing the bus stop location as 'northern east' is slightly imprecise compared to 'northeast'. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the provided visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the changes. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'While', and 'Instead of' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'The earliest map of hospital' is slightly awkward; 'The 2007 map' would be more natural. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general overview from the specific details, which helps the reader follow the progression of information. The structure is clear and supports the overall purpose of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrations', 'placement', and 'facility'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'front hospital road' and 'northern east side', which sound slightly unnatural. While you successfully describe the changes, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated at', 'adjacent to', or 'underwent significant modifications'. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do limit the sophistication of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, particularly with articles (e.g., 'surrounds hospital' instead of 'surrounds the hospital') and prepositions (e.g., 'on the northern east side' instead of 'in the northeast'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'While, in 2010 the placement... there is addition of 2 roundabouts'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not prevent the reader from understanding the information. Increasing the variety of complex structures and improving article usage would help elevate your score.
