Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all the main features of the two maps from 2007 and 2010. The student correctly identifies the addition of new infrastructure such as the new bus station, staff parking, and roundabouts, as well as the changes to the road layout. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which outlines the general trend of development between the two years. While some details could be elaborated further to fully satisfy the criteria for a higher band, all parts of the prompt are addressed clearly. The student makes relevant comparisons and successfully highlights the key spatial changes, such as the separation of public and staff parking areas in 2010. Therefore, a solid performance is demonstrated for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The report displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. The text is divided into four paragraphs, including a clear introduction, an overall summary, and separate body paragraphs for each year. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'In 2010'. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical and the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'by thoroughly analysing the drawings it was identified that...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific map descriptions, contributing to a clear and readable structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to maps and infrastructure, such as 'layout', 'entrance road', 'roundabout', and 'renovation'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices and collocations are unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'plan new bus station' instead of 'a new bus station plan' or 'new bus station facilities', and 'bus stops area provided'. Spelling is generally accurate, but lexical control is inconsistent. Despite these flaws, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main features of the diagrams.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions, such as 'layout has only one entrance road which connected' (tense inconsistency), 'shifted to north direction' (missing article), and 'new bus area allocated' (missing auxiliary verb and preposition). Complex structures are attempted, but they often contain minor errors, such as 'ring road around the hospital which was connected to hospital road and provide entrance'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequent errors in verb forms and articles mean the majority of sentences are not error-free.
