IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, road access to the city hospital had undergone significant redevelopment, with several new facilities added and some of the original features removed. Some features like a public car park, a bus station and two roundabouts had been added in 2010. A few features had been removed, such as bus stops and joined parking for the staff and public, while the ring road and city hospital has remained unchanged throughout the period.
In 2007, there was a total of six bus stops present on either side of the hospital road, with a car parking area, for both staff and public, to its right. There was a city road from west toward east, connected to the hospital road.
In 2010, two roundabouts had been built on the either side of the hospital road. A car parking area for public had been added to the left of the city hospital, with a separate entrance, while the staff car parking had remained unchanged. Bus stops had been removed and a separate block for the bus station had been built to the left of the hospital road, connected to both roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of road access to the city hospital in both 2007 and 2010. The candidate makes clear comparisons between the two years, noting developments such as the addition of roundabouts, a bus station, and a separate public car park, alongside the removal of older bus stops. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the most significant changes, which satisfies the key requirements of Task 1. The data is accurately reported without any major inaccuracies. However, to reach a higher band, the integration of data could be slightly more polished and comprehensive regarding specific spatial relationships. Overall, the task is well addressed, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement and an overview, followed by distinct body paragraphs detailing the layout in 2007 and the modifications in 2010. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with phrases like 'In 2007' and 'In 2010' helping to anchor the temporal shifts. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical, such as 'Some features like... had been added in 2010. A few features had been removed...' which prevents the text from achieving a higher level of seamless cohesion. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases related to map transformation, such as 'redevelopment', 'removed', 'unchanged', and 'roundabouts', are used effectively. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'redevelopment' and 'separate block'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'joined parking for the staff and public', which sounds slightly unnatural compared to 'combined parking for staff and the public'. Spelling and word choices are generally accurate and do not impede communication. With slightly more precise and sophisticated collocation, a higher band could be achieved.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tense narrative structures necessary for describing map changes. Examples such as 'Overall, road access to the city hospital had undergone significant redevelopment...' and 'A car parking area for public had been added...' show a good attempt at the past perfect tense. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'to the either side' (where 'either' should not have 'the') and 'A car parking area for public' (which should be 'A public car parking area' or 'A car park for the public'). Nonetheless, the majority of sentences are clear, and punctuation is generally sound. The errors do not impede communication.
