Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting the main features and changes between the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. The opening sentence accurately introduces the visual data, and the body paragraphs effectively detail specific alterations, such as the addition of the public car park, the replacement of bus stops with roundabouts, and the new bus station. The response captures the key spatial reconfigurations well, fulfilling the core requirements of Academic Task 1 without omitting major trends or features. A band score of 7.0 reflects this thorough and well-supported coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overall summary, and two body paragraphs dedicated to each year or the transition between them. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'In 2007', and 'During 2010', which help guide the reader through the chronological changes. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical, as seen in the repetitive use of 'as well as' in the final paragraph. Progression is generally clear, earning a solid band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing map changes, using terms like 'incorporation', 'layout', 'replacement', and 'reconfigurations'. There are, however, some lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'depics' instead of 'depicts' and 'originnally' instead of 'originally'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, aligning with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'where originnally the staff and public park was situated'). Grammatical control is generally fair, but there are notable errors, including tense and preposition confusion ('During 2010' instead of 'By 2010', 'in the middle hospital road' instead of 'on the middle hospital road') and subject-verb agreement slips. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
