Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. The response outlines the main features and trends, noting the modernization of infrastructure, such as the replacement of multiple bus stops with a central bus station, the addition of a circular intersection, and the segregation of the parking area. Key comparisons are made effectively between the two time periods, highlighting changes like the rearrangement of public and staff parking. While some minor details could be further elaborated, the overview is clear and the overall response satisfies the requirements of Task 1 well, earning a band score of 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing the maps from 2007 and 2010 respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2007', 'In contrast to this in 2010', and 'Moreover' are utilized to guide the reader through the comparisons. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or abrupt, and paragraphing could be slightly more polished to ensure seamless progression. Overall arrangement is coherent, leading to a band score of 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'modernization', 'segregated', 'circular intersection', and 'infrastructure'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'had underwent' instead of 'had undergone', 'sharing parking lot' instead of 'shared parking lot', and 'city road' instead of 'ring road'. Despite these occasional lexical errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, meriting a band score of 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional-like contrastive phrases. There are, however, noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'infrastructure had underwent', 'main structure of roads were kept', and 'numerous small bus stops was replaced' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation and capitalization errors also appear, such as unnecessary capitalization in 'Overall, The infrastructure'. These errors occasionally cause minor friction for the reader, resulting in a band score of 6.0.
