IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given maps demonstrate the comparison of city hospital's road access points in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the infrastructure had undergone a huge modernization. The multiple bus stops at the hospital road had been replaced by a single bus station and the combined parking area for staff and public had been separated. While the main structure of roads was kept in their earliest form, other changes occurred.

In 2007, the city hospital was surrounded by the ring road, connected with hospital road on south whereas, the bus stops had continuously encircled the hospital road. Furthermore, the shared parking lot for both public and staff was present on the right side of the hospital road.

In contrast to this in 2010, City hospital had experienced a major development. Although the original ring road had still enclosed the city hospital, the circular intersection had also been added to the southern exit of ring road. The numerous small bus stops were replaced with one large central bus station at the south-west of the hospital which was linked with hospital road by a two circular junctions. Moreover, the parking area had been segregated into two well disciplined parking spaces which included the public car parking shifted on the eastern side which was connected with city hospital through the ring road while the former combined parking area was now used by staff only. However the city road was still at the north side of city hospital

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the two maps effectively, providing a clear overview followed by detailed comparisons between 2007 and 2010. The writer successfully highlights major modifications, such as the replacement of multiple bus stops with a single bus station, the addition of a circular intersection, and the segregation of the parking area into separate staff and public facilities. The information is accurately reported without any significant omissions or misinterpretations. The overall trend is clearly established right from the beginning, satisfying the requirements for an academic overview. Therefore, this performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.5, demonstrating a clear and thorough response to the task prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. It begins with a helpful introductory overview paragraph, followed by a well-structured description of the 2007 layout and a contrasting paragraph detailing the 2010 changes. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through spatial relationships, such as 'In 2007', 'In contrast to this in 2010', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing could be slightly refined, and referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive. Despite these minor issues, the logical flow is easy to follow throughout, corresponding comfortably to a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for describing maps and spatial transformations. Words and phrases such as 'modernization', 'encircled', 'segregated', and 'circular intersection' show an attempt to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation. There are, however, occasional minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as 'well disciplined parking spaces' and 'city road was still at the north side'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choice does not impede communication. This performance fits the Band 6.5 descriptors effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and passive voice constructions appropriately (e.g., 'The multiple bus stops at the hospital road had been replaced'). There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating a fair degree of grammatical control. However, a few grammatical slips and punctuation inconsistencies persist, such as missing articles ('at the south-west of the hospital') and minor prepositions errors ('connected with city hospital'). These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. The overall control reflects a solid Band 6.5 level.
