IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given maps demonstrate a comparison of the city hospital's road access points in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the infrastructure had undergone a significant modernization. The multiple bus stops on the hospital road had been replaced by a single bus station and the combined parking area for staff and public had been separated. While the main structure of roads was kept in their earliest form, other changes occurred.

In 2007, the city hospital was surrounded by the ring road, connected with the hospital road on the south whereas, the bus stops had continuously encircled the hospital road. Furthermore, the shared parking lot for both public and staff was present on the right side of the hospital road.

In contrast to this in 2010, the city hospital had experienced a major development. Although the original ring road had still enclosed the city hospital, a circular intersection had also been added to the southern exit of the ring road. The numerous small bus stops were replaced with one large central bus station at the south-west of the hospital which was linked with hospital road by a two circular junctions. Moreover, the parking area had been segregated into two well-disciplined parking spaces which included the public car parking shifted on the eastern side which was connected with city hospital through the ring road while the former combined parking area was now used by staff only. However the city road was still at the north side of city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the main changes and making relevant comparisons between the 2007 and 2010 maps. The student identifies key developments such as the replacement of multiple bus stops with a central bus station, the separation of the parking area, and the addition of a circular intersection and roundabouts. The overview in the second paragraph effectively highlights the overarching trends of modernization and restructuring. All necessary details are covered well, and the ideas are logically presented, aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptors for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction with an overview, followed by separate body paragraphs detailing the maps for 2007 and 2010. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'In 2007', 'In contrast to this in 2010', and 'Furthermore', guiding the reader smoothly through the spatial changes. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7 performance in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student exhibits an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to describing maps and urban changes, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'modernization', 'segregated', and 'circular intersection'. There are some slight awkwardness and word choice errors, such as 'kept in their earliest form' instead of 'original layout' or 'retained', and 'two circular junctions'. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some precision, which places this response comfortably at a Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses ('which was linked with hospital road') and concessive clauses ('Although the original ring road had still enclosed...'). While there are occasional grammatical slips—such as 'the public car parking shifted on the eastern side' instead of 'shifted to the eastern side' and a missing comma after introductory phrases—these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control over grammar merits a solid Band 7.
