IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

To access the road to city hospital in 2007 and 2010, two significant maps are given with other different surroundings to the hospital. It has clearly mentioned the compass for direction and navigation.

Overall, it clear that in both the maps of different years, city hospital lied between the ring road surrounded, very next to the hostpital. Also, the development around the hospital with different things like bus station, public and staff's car parking, roundabouts and structure of the whole area dramatically changed in the year 2010 from 2007, as enumerate in the maps.

In 2007, there was Bus stop on the east direction from the hospital. There was south-facing way of hospital's ring road connects to Hospital road, then to the city road later on to the south direction. On the east side of the hospital road there was one common parking for everyone.

In 2010, there was public car parking very east side of the ring road. There w southas 2 roundabouts, south facing from the hospital's ring road which connects the Hospital road then another one which later on connects the city road. However, both roundabouts were well touched with small road leads to Bus station.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the two maps showing road access to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. While the student identifies some key changes—such as the addition of roundabouts, a bus station, and updated parking facilities—the overview and body paragraphs lack clear selection and reporting of the most important trends. The overview states that the hospital 'lied between the ring road surrounded', which is confusing, and the subsequent descriptions miss several critical spatial relationships and comparisons. Furthermore, the description of the 2010 changes contains significant confusion regarding the layout of the roundabouts and parking zones, meaning the information is only partially conveyed. This performance aligns best with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, providing a basic framework. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow due to awkward transitions and unclear referencing. For instance, sentences like 'To access the road to city hospital in 2007 and 2010, two significant maps are given' feel disjointed from the core spatial data. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurately used, such as 'However, both roundabouts were well touched with small road leads to Bus station', which disrupts the logical flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty. This warrants a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with several awkward word choices and phrasing errors that restrict precision. Examples include 'surrounded, very next to the hostpital', 'common parking for everyone', and 'well touched with small road'. There are also spelling issues, such as 'hostpital' and 'southas'. While the student attempts some less common terms like 'dramatically changed' and 'roundabouts', inaccuracies in collocation and word formation impede natural expression. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical. Examples of grammatical errors include 'It has clearly mentioned the compass' (passive voice misuse), 'Overall, it clear that' (missing verb), and 'small road leads' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation and preposition use are also inconsistent, leading to sentences that require extra effort to parse. Although the meaning can generally be extracted, frequent errors occur across the text, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
