Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The candidate attempts to summarise the main features of the two maps comparing road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. An overview is provided, noting the redevelopment of the area and the addition of new facilities such as roundabouts and a public car park, while the staff car park remained unchanged. Key features like the bus stop relocation and new roundabouts are mentioned. However, the response is incomplete in parts due to a fragmented introductory sentence ("Over the period between 2007 and 2010"), and some descriptions of spatial relationships are unclear or slightly inaccurate (e.g., describing how the ring road and city road ran). The development of ideas is limited, placing this response at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, including an incomplete introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is an attempt at overall organisation, but the logical progression is hindered by poor punctuation, spacing issues, and awkward transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal or mechanically applied, such as repetitive use of commas before conjunctions (e.g., "seen that ,") and abrupt shifts between sentences. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the precise spatial layout described. Paragraphing is attempted, but the structural integrity is compromised by sentence fragments. This aligns with a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, with attempts to use specific terms related to maps and infrastructure, such as "redevelopment," "facilities," "roundabouts," and "relocated." However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including "umderwent" (underwent), "inroduced" (introduced), "are" (area), and "establashid" (established). The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, and word choices occasionally feel unnatural or awkward, such as "hospital road cut from crossroad to reaching hospital enterence." These errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the lexical score at a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences attempt simple or modified clauses, but complex structures are frequently faulty. There are major grammatical and punctuation errors throughout, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, fragments, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., "staff car park was remained unchanged", "the ring road was go through", "city road was gone besides"). Punctuation is particularly weak, with spaces preceding commas and periods. These frequent errors cause significant strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for Band 4.5.
