IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The two maps illustrate road access to a city hospital before reconstruction in 2007 and after in 2010.
Overall, there are signaficant transformation seen between 2007 to 2010. In 2007, the staff and public car space was together but was separated by 2010. In addition, there are two roundabouts in 2010 on the map of the hospital. And also the bus station is joined with the hospital road unlike before.
Turning to the details, in 2007 car park {both staff and public} was on the east side of the hospital road, whereas now, the public parking is on the northern east side by the ring road and the rest remains the same. There is a roundabout on the enterance of the hospital and one on the far south side with city road.
Similarly, the bus stop location was changed to far east from the hospital to now on the southern west side of the city hospital and blended in with both the circles.
All in all, the maps show a clear transition of the road access to hospital with more space added for future conveniences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the two maps of the city hospital from 2007 and 2010. The main features are identified and reported, such as the separation of staff and public car parks, the addition of two roundabouts, and the relocation of the bus station. Comparisons are made appropriately, noting how the road access changed over the three-year period. However, some details are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as describing the public parking location as 'northern east side by the ring road' when it is primarily to the north-east. Overall, the content covers the requirements well, supporting a solid Band 6.5 or 6 descriptor profile, where relevant information is presented, though minor omissions or slight inaccuracies in data reporting prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is arranged coherently, with an introduction, body paragraphs dealing with specific details, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the comparison. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'And also the bus station is joined' uses colloquial and repetitive linking. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'the rest remains the same' without explicitly clarifying what 'the rest' refers to. Cohesive devices are present, but their application lacks flexibility. Logical organisation is maintained overall, enabling the reader to follow the spatial changes between 2007 and 2010, fitting the criteria for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'reconstruction', 'transformation', 'roundabouts', and 'relocation'. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'signaficant' instead of 'significant', 'enterance' instead of 'entrance', and 'southern west' instead of 'south-west'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary with some inaccuracy. While these errors do not impede overall communication—the reader can still easily understand the spatial descriptions—they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary is sufficient for the task but constrained by spelling mistakes and occasional imprecise collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'In 2007, the staff and public car space was together but was separated by 2010.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'there are signaficant transformation seen' and prepositional mistakes like 'on the enterance' and 'to far east'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and despite the errors, meaning is rarely impeded. The student demonstrates control over basic structures and attempts complex forms, placing this performance comfortably at Band 6.
