IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given illustrations compare the changes that occurred in the City Hospital over the period of 3 years from 2007.
Overall, City Hospital suffered positive changes in the traffic management by the addition of roundabouts, Bus Station and public car park over the span of given period. However the map seems to be more crowded at the end of the period.
Intially, in the year 2007, city hospital was surrounded by ring road in the north side of the map. At the south of the Ring Road, there had been a straight Hospital Road. There had been six Bus stops in the either sides of the Hospital Road, and a Car Park for the staff and public. The Hospital Road lead to the city road. The city road moved from east to west of the illustration.
In the final year 2010, several changes can be seen in the map. First, the roundabouts were introduced at the junction of City Road and Hospital Road and Hospital Road and Ring Road. Second the Bus Station was built south of the Hospital road and Public bus park east of the City Hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers the main features of both maps well, identifying key changes such as the introduction of roundabouts, the bus station, and the new public car park. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which captures the general transformation. However, there are minor inaccuracies in spatial details, such as stating the bus station was built south of the Hospital road when the visual data places it to the west, and referring to a 'Public bus park' instead of a public car park. Despite these minor slips, all parts of the prompt are adequately addressed with a clear focus on the comparative changes between 2007 and 2010, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. A score of 6.5 is awarded as some details are slightly imprecise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, a body paragraph for 2007, and a final body paragraph for 2010. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the temporal stages. Cohesive devices are employed to sequence information, such as 'Intially', 'In the final year 2010', 'First', and 'Second'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical. For example, 'However the map seems to be more crowded at the end of the period' feels a bit informal and disconnected from the descriptive data. Overall cohesion is coherent and allows for smooth reading, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map transformation, using terms like 'illustrations', 'traffic management', 'junction', and 'roundabouts'. However, there are notable word choice errors and typos, such as 'Intially' instead of 'initially', 'either sides' instead of 'both sides', 'lead' instead of 'led', and 'Public bus park' instead of 'Public car park'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally lack precision or correct collocation. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The given illustrations compare the changes that occurred...' and 'In the final year 2010, several changes can be seen in the map.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'City Hospital suffered positive changes' (unnatural collocation), missing articles ('in north side', 'at south of the Ring Road'), and tense inconsistencies ('there had been' instead of 'there were'). While complex structures are attempted, they frequently contain errors. However, these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, earning a Band 6.0.
