Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps comparing road access to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010. The student correctly identifies key developments such as the addition of roundabouts, a new public car park on the east side of Ring Road, the new bus station, and changes to the staff car park and bus stops. However, some descriptions are vague or lack precision, such as 'few changes took place in 2010' and 'new car parking was added at the right side'. While an overview is attempted in the concluding paragraph, it lacks detail regarding the overall spatial transformation. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, representing an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression from the 2007 layout to the 2010 modifications. However, cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'To start with', 'Moving further', and 'Overall'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance, 'staf car park was construct on the place of bus stops' lacks precise spatial referencing. Paragraphing is adequate, but the logical links between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band score. This performance fits the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms such as 'layout', 'surrounded', 'roundabout', 'car park', and 'bus station'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'esablished' instead of 'established', 'staf' instead of 'staff', and 'construct' instead of 'constructed'. Less common lexical items are attempted with varying degrees of accuracy. Vocabulary repetition is also evident, such as the repeated use of 'car parking' and 'bus stop'. These lexical slips do not completely impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'In the south direction city road was situated' and 'New car parking was added at the right side of the city hospital and new bus station also build in the west side'. However, grammatical errors are frequent, including missing articles ('in center of ring road', 'in west side'), passive voice errors ('bus station also build'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Two roundabout was added'), and tense inconsistencies ('changes has been took place'). Punctuation is also weak in places, such as missing capital letters and periods. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause strain for the reader, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.
