The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

As we all know the whole world has been making progress and population is increasing day by day.I have to discuss the comperison between road access to the city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

In 2007, area surrounded by the City Hospital was less developed. As the hospital is surrounded by ring road.In South there was hospital road with enough bus stops, connecting the hospital with city road. There was a single entrance and parking for the vehicles of staff and public in 2007 but in 2010 there were two entry points and separate parkings for staff.Hospital road was developed with roundabouts one connected with city road and second with hospital and ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 111 words, which significantly impacts task completion. While the student attempts to highlight some main features—such as the addition of roundabouts, separate staff parking, and changes to Hospital Road—the overview is conversational and inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response (e.g., opening with 'As we all know the whole world has been making progress...'). Key details like the new public car park on Ring Road and the bus station replacing individual bus stops are either missed or vaguely described. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 4.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks proper paragraphing, combining the introduction and body into a single poorly structured block of text. There is no clear overall progression or standard Academic Task 1 structure. While some basic cohesive devices and referencing words are used (e.g., 'In 2007', 'but in 2010'), the lack of clear paragraph breaks and awkward transitions between ideas impede smooth reading. Overall arrangement is faulty and mechanical, aligning with the descriptors for Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive. The student uses standard descriptive terms such as 'developed', 'parking', 'entrance', and 'roundabouts', but attempts less common vocabulary with limited success, such as misspelling 'comparison' as 'comperison'. Furthermore, the inclusion of conversational preamble ('As we all know the whole world has been making progress') demonstrates an inappropriate register for an academic report. The range is minimally adequate for the task, supporting a Band 5.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and spacing errors, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'day by day.I have', 'developed. As the'). Errors in prepositions and articles are also noticeable, such as 'area surrounded by the City Hospital' instead of 'the area around the city hospital'. Although these errors do not completely obscure the intended meaning, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 6.0.
