IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrates the changes in road access to a city hospital in three years time- in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, there is a huge structural improvement in road access. In 2007, the bus stops are located at hospital road while staff and public parking are on the same area. However in 2010, the road access are more convenient and far more structured, they built roundabouts and designated areas for bus station, staff and public car park.

In 2007, the bus stops are located along sides of Hospital road while the designated car park for staff and public are located just on the east side of Hospital road and north side of city road.

While in 2010, the bus stop has been demolished and a bus station has been built on the west side of hospital road. The staff car park stayed on the east side of hospital road but they moved the public car park on the east side of city hospital. Roundabouts are also built, one in the middle of city road and hospital road while the other one is in the middle of the city hospital and hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features of the city hospital road access in both 2007 and 2010. The response provides a clear overview highlighting the structural improvements, such as the addition of roundabouts and designated parking areas. Key comparisons are made, including the relocation of the public car park from the east of Hospital Road to the east of the city hospital, and the replacement of individual bus stops with a bus station. However, there are minor mechanical errors in detail, such as the statement that individual bus stops were 'demolished' and that the timeline spans 'three years time' instead of comparative static maps, yet the overall summary is well-grounded in the visual data. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5 to 7.0, earning a 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overall summary, and two body paragraphs detailing the features of 2007 and 2010 respectively. There is a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2007', and 'While in 2010' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'on the same area' instead of 'in the same area'), and some cohesive links feel a bit repetitive. Progression is clear throughout, satisfying Band 6.5 criteria fully.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate lexical items related to maps and urban planning such as 'structural improvement', 'designated areas', 'demolished', and 'roundabouts'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and preposition use, such as 'bus stops are located at hospital road' instead of 'along Hospital Road' and 'on the same area' instead of 'in the same area'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While in 2010, the bus stop has been demolished and a bus station has been built...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps illustrates'), tense inconsistencies ('the bus stops are located' when describing a past map), and run-on structures with comma splices ('...far more structured, they built roundabouts...'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band score, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection.
