IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two maps display changes made to the City road approaching the Hospital, from 2007 to 2010.

Overall, the road witnessed some changes that included a new car park, bus stops replaced by a bus station and two new roundabouts.

Surrounding the hospital, the Ring road was connected to the Hospital road giving access to the car park, in 2007. In 2010, two roundabouts were added at the junction of the Hospital road and the City road. In 2007, there was a car park for both the staff and the public in the Southeast of the Ring road, by 2010 it had become restricted to the staff only and for the public a new parking lot had been built in the East of the Ring road.

Moreover, there were several bus stops on both sides of the Hospital road, they were replaced by a common space for parking buses, a bus station in the Southwest of the Ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features of the changes shown in the maps from 2007 to 2010. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, which outlines the key developments: a new car park, replacement of bus stops with a bus station, and the addition of two roundabouts. The comparisons between 2007 and 2010 are well-supported by specific locations and details, such as the transformation of the combined car park into a staff-only parking lot and the introduction of a new public car park. There are no significant omissions or inaccuracies in the reporting of the visual data, demonstrating a strong understanding of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and supporting body paragraphs that detail the specific spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas and features of the maps. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2007', 'In 2010', and 'Moreover' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the temporal and spatial progression of the data. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the relationships between the features in both years are easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a Task 1 response. Less common items such as 'witnessed some changes', 'junction', and 'restricted to' are used with reasonable control. Word choices are mostly accurate, although there are minor awkwardness issues in phrasing, such as 'City road approaching the Hospital' instead of 'road access to the city hospital'. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'Surrounding the hospital, the Ring road was connected...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is generally strong. Minor punctuation and capitalization slips occur, such as lowercase letters for proper terms ('Ring road', 'Hospital road', 'City road'), but these do not impede communication. The use of past and past-perfect tenses ('had become', 'had been built') is handled well to describe historical changes.
