IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the developments in the vicinity of a city hospital during 2007 and 2010.

Overall, significant development took place on the road accessing to the city hospital, including expansion and bifurcation of some previous facilities over the period. However, only two roundabouts were the new additions on the roads.

Turning to details, to the east of the city hospital, a public car park attached to the ring road was built in 2010, which was earlier combined with the staff car park. While, a roundabout was constructed on ring road in 2010, at the junction connecting to the hospital road.

Moving further, one more roundabout was added at the juntion of city road road and hospital road. Regarding the bus stops, the six bus stops situated along both sides of the hospital road, expanded as one big unit to the left of the hospital road in 2010, and connected through the both roundabouts. Finally, to the eastern side of the hospital road, a common car park facility bifurcated and became the car park only for staff members.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all the key features of the maps well, making relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010. The student correctly identifies major changes such as the addition of the new public car park, the designation of the staff car park, the construction of two roundabouts, and the replacement of individual bus stops with a bus station. The overview paragraph successfully summarises the general trends. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting the location of the bus station, which is described as expanding from the bus stops rather than being constructed as a distinct new facility to the west. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear and structured overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that guide the reader through the spatial changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Turning to details', 'Moving further', and 'Finally' are used effectively to sequence information. Paragraphing is appropriate, separating the introduction/overview from the detailed spatial descriptions. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the ambiguous use of 'which was earlier combined' in relation to the car parks, which slightly disrupts the smooth flow of information. Overall, logical organisation and progression are maintained throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, successfully employing terms like 'vicinity', 'bifurcation', 'construction', and 'designated'. There are occasional awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'road accessing to' instead of 'road access to', and 'juntion of city road road' containing a typo and repetition. Less common lexical items are attempted with general success, though minor inaccuracies in form and preposition use persist. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'a public car park attached to the ring road was built in 2010'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'only two roundabouts were the new additions on the roads' and 'connected through the both roundabouts'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor errors like spelling mistakes ('juntion') and incorrect prepositions ('on ring road' instead of 'on the ring road') occur. The majority of simple sentences are clear, but control over more complex structures is inconsistent.
