Student answer (Band 6.0)

The image illustrates two maps demonstrating the area of City Hospital and its surrounding area in 2007 and 2010.

As in 2007, the City Hospital is surrounded by Ring Road that was connected to the Hospital Road on its south. Towards the very right of the Hospital Road, there is a car park associated for both staff and civilans. On the both sides of the Hospital Road there are six bus stops. Furthermore, perpendicular to the Hospital Road there is City Road.

Later after the construction was completed in 2010, there's an addition of two roundabouts and designated at the both ends of Hospital Road, also a development of a separate bus station on the west of Hospital Road connected by access roads by the roudabouts. Moreover, a new parking space had been allotted to the general public that is situated right next to the City Hospital. The parking area to the east of Hospital Road has been solely allotted to the staff of the hospital.

In conclusion, the addition of two roundabouts and separate car parks for staff and public had been made. The bus stops on the road had been replaced by a separate bus station with their access roads. As this development has made better traffic flow, inovative bus station and managed traffic along the Hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the two maps of City Hospital in 2007 and 2010 and making relevant comparisons. Key developments such as the addition of roundabouts, the reconfiguration of the car parks from staff-and-public to separated staff and public areas, and the replacement of individual bus stops with a new bus station are clearly identified and reported. An overview is provided both in the body paragraphs and the conclusion, highlighting the primary structural changes. The information is accurate and grounded in the visual data, earning a solid Band 7.0 for fully covering the task requirements with clear comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized logically with a clear progression from the introduction describing the 2007 map, through the body paragraph detailing the 2010 modifications, to the final concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different temporal stages. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'As in 2007', 'Furthermore', and 'Later after the construction was completed'. However, some cohesive phrasing is a bit clumsy or repetitive (e.g., 'Later after the construction was completed in 2010, there's an addition...'). Overall organisation is clear, but referencing and cohesion are occasionally slightly mechanical, placing this firmly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, incorporating terms like 'perpendicular', 'allotted', 'designation', and 'reconfiguration' implicitly. There are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'civilans' (spelling error for civilians), 'car park associated for both staff' (incorrect preposition), and 'inovative' (spelling/choice error for innovative). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. Because the errors do not impede communication and the range is sufficient to describe the spatial changes, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'The image illustrates two maps demonstrating the area of City Hospital and its surrounding area...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward fragment constructions, particularly in the conclusion ('As this development has made better traffic flow, inovative bus station and managed traffic along the Hospital'), which lacks a main verb clause. Other minor slips include 'there's an addition of two roundabouts and designated' (passive voice error). However, control over grammar is generally acceptable and communication is rarely impeded, leading to a Band 6.0.
