IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The two maps below showing road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010 show major difference and it can be seen that the road access along with the infrastructure surrounding it has had many changes and many affects of modernization along with proper utilisation of space for different needs.
In 2007 the City Hosptal did not have a roundabout infront of it but as of 2010 it does which links all the different facilities together such as the staff car parking, bus station and public car park. In 2010 a seperate car parking for the public was built with a seperate road access, along with a seperate staff car parking and a bus station whereas in 2009 the staff and public car park was in the same area. Back in 2007 the hospital road had bus stops surrounding it and a city road right in front of it, and in 2010 a seperate bus station was built for them, utilising space correctly and making sure traffic could move more freely.
Therefore all these drastic changes look as positive changes made that are using the free space perfectly making sure that the general public, staff etc does not face any issues regarding traffic congestion or less to no parking spots available. Building rounabouts in all the right places such as the area which connects the main city road to both the hospital and the bus station allows the public to direct their destination freely and quickly without causing congestion as they probably could back in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the maps, noting key developments such as the addition of roundabouts, the separation of public and staff car parks, and the new bus station. However, there are notable inaccuracies in the details reported. For example, the student states that 'whereas in 2009 the staff and public car park was in the same area' (referring to the 2007 map) and mentions individual bus stops incorrectly. Furthermore, the response includes subjective evaluation and speculation ('utilising space correctly and making sure traffic could move more freely'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 summary. The overview is also intertwined awkwardly with the introduction. This falls under Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, providing a basic framework, but the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing choices and run-on sentences. The opening sentence is a massive, single complex sentence that attempts to serve as both introduction and overview. Cohesive devices are repetitive and basic (e.g., 'In 2007... In 2010... whereas in 2009... Back in 2007...'). Reference words are occasionally unclear, and the overall flow lacks the smooth transitions expected at higher bands. Paragraphing is not used effectively to separate distinct concepts. This reflects Band 5 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate to convey basic information, but it is repetitive and contains several lexical and spelling errors. For instance, 'Hosptal' is misspelled, and phrases like 'affects of modernization' (should be 'effects') and 'seperate' (should be 'separate') demonstrate noticeable inaccuracies. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary ('infrastructure', 'congestion', 'utilisation'), the execution is flawed, and the range remains limited. Word choice is sometimes imprecise. This corresponds to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text relies heavily on lengthy, run-on sentences that lack proper punctuation, making it difficult for the reader to parse the meaning. The very first sentence is a 46-word compound-complex structure containing multiple clauses strung together with coordinating conjunctions. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in front of it', 'to the public'), incorrect preposition usage, and punctuation omissions. Although there are attempts at complex sentence forms, they are often faulty and lack control. This is indicative of Band 5.
